Fever Phobia

You don't have to be afraid of fever! Fever is the most common reason that parents seek medical attention for a child, and it is most commonly due to a viral infection. Fever is not a disease. In fact, fever is a well designed weapon that the body uses to fight infection. Fever slows the growth of bacteria and viruses and makes the body's infection fighting cells more active. In reality, fever is our friend.

Fever is defined as:

  • a rectal temperature >100.4 degrees
  • an oral temperature >100 degrees
  • an axillary temperature >99 degrees

Healthy people have wide range of "normal" body temperature -- anywhere from 96.8 to 100.8. Only 8 percent of healthy people have a normal body temperature of exactly 98.6. The body will not allow a temperature to rise above 106 in an illness.

More important than the actual temperature is the appearance of the child. Your child's activity level, hydration, urination and overall appearance are more significant than any number.

Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin (ibuprofen) will decrease your child’s fever by a few degrees for a few hours. Always make sure that you are giving an adequate dosage of medicine at the appropriate time interval.

If your child is ill appearing or is less than 3 months of age, please contact our office. Your doctor can discuss the need for further evaluation.
